Objective

Objective: Death squads and juntas. In many Latin and South American countries civil war and coups are a way of life. Often, when one government is overthrown for another, dissenting individuals or their families are hunted down by death squads or juntas, and tortured and sometimes killed. This lesson will look at death squads and juntas.

1. Class discussion. What is a junta? Why are juntas used? Who has been hurt by juntas? Why do the people of a country allow juntas? Do the people of a country have any way to stop death squads? Is a government or dictator that uses death squads a stable government? What is the differences and similarities between juntas and the Nazis SS troops or the Russian former KGB? Are there countries in the present time in which juntas are given free rein?
