Diary

Portia's diary is the thread which runs through the entire plot. Begin keeping your own diary, at home or in class, and try to write in it faithfully, every day, as Portia does. What would you write about? Who would you write about? Where would you keep it?

Letters

Letters were the central means of communication for the characters in the novel. Write your own letters, to your friends and family. What benefits does this means of communication have over others? What are the drawbacks?

Clothing

The novel is set in 1930s London. Try to find pictures or descriptions of clothing from this era. If possible, print or cut out the pictures, and post them in the classroom.
