1) Class Discussion: The first chapter of the novel introduces the large cast of characters. Discuss with students each of the characters, their motivations, and their relationships. The second chapter of the novel begins to describe the conflict that will propel the plot. Discuss with students the nature of this conflict and how it impacts each of the characters.

2) Conflict: Define conflict. Ask students to discuss in an essay or with a partner the conflict in this novel and how it might propel the plot to its conclusion. Students should use quotes from the novel to support any conclusions.
