1. Commissario Guido Brunetti is called to investigate a homicide. Who is the victim and how is the crime committed?

Brunetti is called on to investigate the death of renowned German conductor Maestro Helmut Wellauer. Wellauer has been poisoned with cyanide which was, presumably, put into his coffee.

2. Where was the crime committed? What event was taking place at the time of the murder?

The crime was committed at La Fenice, a Venice opera house. Wellauer, a conductor, was in the middle of a performance of La Traviata when he died.

3. What is Wellauer's reputation? What is the man's family situation?

Brunetti learns that Wellauer was a pedophile, raping young girls of 12 or 13. Wellauer's family situation was dire. Wellauer's wife poisoned him because he raped her daughter by a previous marriage. The poison did not kill Wellauer but it did cause him to go deaf.
