Objective

This lesson introduces students to the memoir Dear America: Notes of An Undocumented Citizen by Jose Antonio Vargas. Students will research the author, his body of works, and the publication of this book, and will read and discuss the Prologue and Note to Readers. Dear America is a follow-up to two major publications of Vargas’s writing about his life as an undocumented American that were featured in the New York Times Magazine and Time magazine. Since “coming out” publicly about his status, Vargas has embraced activism and advocacy for immigration policy changes and rewriting the “master narrative” of migrants worldwide.
