Objective

Objective: Eliza Sommers is a Chilean girl being raised in Chile by English parents. She finds comfort in the maid, Mama Fresia, with whom she feels a familial bond. This lesson will explore who Eliza feels she most fits in with in her adoptive family.

1) Class discussion: Eliza struggles with the stark contrast of her heritage and the way she's being raised. She is essentially asked by the Sommers to go against everything she sees around her and even her own nationality by raising her as a very proper English young lady. Why might Eliza prefer the lifestyle of someone like Mama Fresia over her own life of privilege? Should Eliza just enjoy her life or try to embrace Chilean culture?

2) Split the class into two teams and have them debate this idea. Allow 5 minutes or so for them to arrange their arguments, and then call on...
