Objective

In Act 1, Scene 2, Ragueneau, Ligniere, and Le Bret discuss Cyrano de Bergerace with Ciugy. In doing this they are framing Cyrano's entrance, creating anticipation for his arrival onstage.

The objective of this lesson is to examine the dramatic purpose of framing an entrance.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Make a list on the board of the information regarding Cyrano that Ragueneau, Ligniere, and Le Bret disclose in the first scene of Act 1. What do we know about the title character and his attitude toward the setting of Act 1? What old we expect him to do one he enters?

2. Divide the class into several groups. Have each group think of a movie in which the entrance of a character has been framed by other characters (The Dark Knight, The Sexy Beast). Present to the class what is said about the framed character and how the appearance compares to...
