1. What odd events had the Cyclops encountered since leaving home port?

Since leaving home port, the Cyclops had encountered several odd events. First, a seaman who fell overboard was battered into a pulp by the port propeller. Next, there was a collision with the cruiser Raleigh that caused minor damage to both ships. Five prisoners filled the brig. One of the prisoners had been convicted of brutally murdering a shipmate. Outside Rio Harbor, the ship nearly ran into a reef. When the executive officer accused the captain of endangering the ship, he placed him under arrest and confined him to quarters. Lastly, there was a malcontent crew, a problem starboard engine, and a captain who drank too much.

2. Describe Lieutenant Commander George Worley.

Lieutenant Commander George Worley could have been a character out of the novel "Treasure Island." All he lacked was an eye patch and peg leg. He was a large man with a short neck and massive head. He had long, thick hands. He was not a stickler for Navy regulations. When on board ship, his uniform often consisted of bedroom slippers, derby hat, and long-john underwear.
