In this chapter, Mark and Delia Owens are introduced as a couple who put their academic studies aside to travel to the Kalahari to study animals in their natural habitats. The objectives of this lesson are for students to explore the difference between academic and real-life studies and to discuss why this couple might have decided to pick up and move to the Kalahari for their work.

1) Class Activity: As a class, create a list of adjectives that are used to describe the Kalahari. Based on this description, do you understand why the Owens might have wanted to study there?
