Objective

Objective: Chapter 1 One of the main themes of the novel "The Crazy Horse Electric Game" is the strength that a person can gain by overcoming adversity. Willie Weaver loses his athletic ability and believes that his life is over; however, this loss forces him to discover his true strengths. In this pre-reading lesson, students will explore the idea of loss and personal development as preparation for the novel.

1. Individual: In their journals, have students write a list of characteristics that they believe define who they are. What makes them unique? Then ask them to look back at the list and identify the most important of these characteristics. Which of these characteristics truly defines who they are?

2. Class discussion: Have students share their ideas and make a list on the board. What trends seem to develop? What kinds of characteristics are important to them? How do they want...
