The women whose stories are told in the book were incarcerated at York Correctional Institution in Connecticut. The objective of this lesson is to explore the state of Connecticut.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about the state of Connecticut. Begin with defining the state's geographical location. Ask the students about any current perceptions they have about the state. How have these changed from their perceptions prior to reading the book? How would the students characterize Connecticut in one word? Do the students feel like they want to visit? Why or why not? Do any of the students feel like they would like to live there? Why or why not?

As an in-class exercise, have the students do some online research about the history of Connecticut. What has Connecticut contributed to the country? Who are some famous...
