Essay Topics

Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:

Essay Topic 1

Confessions of a Shopaholic is told from a first person perspective through its protagonist. Explain why this perspective is valuable to the tone of the story. Why would the author want to choose first person over third person? In what way is the story benefiting by being told through the eyes of Rebecca? Is the story more lighthearted or personal because of the way it is told? Reference the novel to support your argument.

Essay Topic 2

Though Rebecca is kind, she is often not honest. In many cases she lies in order to get out of a bad situation. Address the subject of honesty in the book. Why does Rebecca repeatedly lie to Derek Smeath and other characters? What fears keep her from telling the truth? In which parts of the story do her fallacies come back on her? Would her life be easier if she just told the truth? Provide examples from the novel to support your argument.

Essay Topic 3

Rebecca is a humorous character. Suze is as well. Without humor, Confessions of a Shopaholic would not be the same. Explain why humor is an important element to the story. Why is Rebecca a funny character? What makes her funny? Is it her actions, vocabulary, outlook on life, or something else? How does Rebecca's humor mesh with Suze's? Without each other, would the story be nearly as enjoyable? Use examples from the novel to make the point.
