At the beginning of Common Ground, Colin Diver was finishing his last year at Harvard Law School where he was the editor of the Harvard Law Review. Although he had accepted a position with a major law firm in Washington, D.C., he was having second thoughts about the position. While he was enrolled in law school, he managed to avoid the draft. The objective of this lesson is to examine the draft in the United States for the Vietnam War.

1) Independent Work: Library Research and Written Summary: Students should research the Vietnam War, including when it started and ended, the reason for the war, how many troops were sent to Vietnam by the Kennedy and Johnson administration, when the draft began, and other information.
