Lesson 1 (from Chapers 1-9)

Objective

In Chapter 6, the author wrote that Dylan and his friends had gone to the prom in "a big honking limo." The objective of this lesson is to examine language and its evolution.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Ask students to come up with a meaning of "honking" in this situation. Ask if there were other words the author might have used. Would some other option have been as effective? Why or why not?

2. For homework: Point out to students that the word "honking" could have meant that Dylan's group rode down the street with the horn sounding. Encourage students to find ten similar examples of words that have double meanings because of language evolution.

3. For class work: Have students break into small groups. Each group should discuss the overall tone and language choices the author used in this book. Were those choices appropriate? Were they in keeping...
