Objective

Cloudstreet is a novel by Australian author Tim Winton. Set in and around Perth, Australia, the narrative follows the lives of the Lamb and Pickles families spanning two decades, from World War II through the 1960s. In this lesson, students will research author Tim Winton and will identify, analyze, and discuss the setting and narrative style of Chapter I.

Lesson

Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the first 5 or so pages of Chapter I of Cloudstreet. After additional research, develop a presentation that defines and analyzes the narrative style of the novel. From whose perspective is the first section of the story related from? Is the narrative told from a past or present tense? What are the notable elements of the author’s narrative style?
