Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.

Harry Bagley - This eccentric, bisexual character is an explorer who is thought of differently by several characters.

Betty - Once part of an unfaithful marriage, this divorced character struggles to rebuild a life as an individual.

Cathy - This young character is easily entertained by playing with boys, painting and playing with guns.

Clive - This family patriarch is proud, loyal, yet disliked by many of the local Africans.

Edward - This gender role confused character holds strong resentment for his father, but finds happiness later in life.
