Objective

City of Ashes is the second novel in Cassandra Clare’s urban fantasy young-adult series, The Mortal Instruments. Set in an underworld of Shadowhunters, vampires, werewolves, faeries, and innumerable demons in New York, the novel follows protagonist Clarissa "Clary" Adele Fray after her discovery that she is a Shadowhunter. Objectives for this lesson include researching Cassandra Clare and the previous book in the series, City of Bones, and analyzing the setting and narrative style of the Prologue, “Smoke and Diamonds.”
