When Che Guevara's mother was married, she was already three months pregnant with Che. She did not want this indiscretion formally noted, so she requested that the date on her son's birth certificate be changed. Che Guevara was born on either May or June 14th, 1929, but no one is quite sure when.

Yerba maté is a type of holly that the Guevara family grew on a small plantation in Rosario for the first year of Che's life. The plant was grown and then brewed into a beverage like tea, but the family soon had to come up with other means of income as the price for the yerba maté plummeted.
