Chapter 1

This first chapter sets the stage well for the rest of the book as it provides many clues to what will happen during the rest of the novel. The objective of this lesson will be to explore some of the possible foreshadowing that happens in this scene, and to discuss some of the possible outcomes.

Lesson

1) Read aloud with the class the part where the hired man refuses to carry the luggage when he hears Captain Jaggery's name. Have the students each write a short prediction about what this reaction could be foreshadowing. Do you believe there is a good reason for this dramatic reaction? Why or why not? What evidence is there in the scene to support your belief? Allow some volunteers to read their ideas.
