Objective

Chapter 1

Cisneros' Hispanic heritage exhibits in her language, perceptions and attitudes. The objective of this lesson is to explore Hispanic culture and its impact on the book.

Lesson

Lead the class in a discussion about Hispanic culture. Begin with a definition and ask the class to validate their understanding by offering examples from the book. Where do the students think Cisneros has lived? What do they use to make their decision? How is regionalism exhibited in language? Interpersonal dynamics? Clothing? What other elements can the students define that help them determine the Hispanic culture?

Divide the class into small groups and have them discuss the author's authenticity. How is she an expert on Hispanic background? During what time period was the book written? What is it about the elements of the work that slots in into this particular time period?
