Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.

Characters

David Schearl - This character is Jewish and arrives in America as a toddler. By the age of six, this character is attending school and is encouraged to venture alone into the neighborhood to play with other immigrant children.

Genya Schearl - This person travels to America with her son, whom her husband has never seen before they arrive in America. She is Jewish and was forced to marry a Jewish man she did not love after a love affair with a Christian.

Albert Schearl - This person moves to America from Austria....
