Objective: In the first two chapters, we are introduced to the main character, Willie Keith. We see his interaction with many different people. The objective of this lesson is to explore this character more in depth by examining his relationships with other people.

1) In Class Writing: What is your first impression of Willie Keith? What can you infer about his character from how he interacts with his mother, his roommates and May Wynn?

2) Class Discussion: Why does Willie think his relationship with May Wynn can never be serious? Given what you know about New York in the 1940s, do you feel that he is justified in his thinking?

3) Groups: Split the class into groups. Have one group examine the relationship between Willie and his mother. Have one group examine the relationship between Willie and his roommates. Have one group examine the relationship between Willie and May Wynn...
