Research Life in Barbados

1. Using the Internet, books, and other sources, ask students to find out what life is like in Barbados. What kind of place is it? Is it a colony? Was there slavery in Barbados at any time in history? What is the government like today? What is the climate like?

2. Ask students to find out how and when people started immigrating from Barbados to New York. Ask them to check the Ellis Island website, and determine whether immigrants from Barbados gained entry into the United States through that site. Are the names of any Barbados natives listed in the records at Ellis Island? If so, what year do the records reflect the passage of the highest number of Barbados immigrants through Ellis Island?

3. Ask students to research what life in New York was like for immigrants from Barbados during the 1920's and 1930's. Ask them...
