Lesson 1 (from Part 1)

Objective

This lesson introduces students to Markus Zusak’s 2018 novel Bridge of Clay. Students will research the author, read “Before the Beginning: The Old TW” and “Portrait of a Killer as a Middle-Aged Man,” and analyze the narrative style of the novel. Bridge of Clay employs a framing device that is established in the beginning of the novel and is returned to in the novel’s ending. The story is narrated by Matthew Dunbar, the eldest son of the five Dunbar sons, although the protagonist of the novel is Matthew’s younger brother Clay.
