Objective: Evelyn Waugh was one of Britain's most influential authors. The aim of this lesson is learn about Waugh's life and work.

1) With the students, brainstorm what they already know about Evelyn Waugh. What influence has he had on popular culture? What other books has he written? Do his books tend to be similar in their styles and themes? Divide the students into pairs and ask them to research Waugh's life and write a short biography. On their return, discuss in what way Waugh´s life is reflected in Brideshead Revisited? Are any of the characters based on either himself or people he knew? Does personal knowledge give the novel anything extra?
2) Brainstorm with the students about Waugh's novels. What are the books about? What themes do they cover? Divide the students into pairs and assign them each a book to research. Ask them to look at...
