This chapter sets the scene, a train moving across Texas and the small town of Yellow Sky. The objective of this lesson is to explore how the author uses descriptive devices to paint a picture of the scene.

Lesson

1. Class Discussion: A descriptive device is an author's way of painting a picture in our mind's eye to develop a scene in the story. How does the author do that as the story opens? What descriptive device does he use to describe the couple? Give an example of the author's use of narrative descriptive devices to paint a picture in our mind's eye of the newly married couple on their way to their home.

2. Group Discussion: Break into four small groups and discuss the following: Describe the train. Describe the scene out the window. What descriptive sentences does the author use? Describe how the author sets...
