Jane Yolen is an American author who has almost 300 books to her credit. She has been referred to as "the Hans Christian Andersen of America" by Newsweek magazine. Some of her works include "Wizards Hall", "Sword of the Rightful King", and "The Devil's Arithmetic".

This lesson discusses the author of the novel "Briar Rose", Jane Yolen.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have the students research the author, Jane Yolen. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her personal background. Take a look at interviews and the author's website to gain information on her writing and where "Briar Rose" fits in with her other novels.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Jane Yolen and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different works written by Yolen during their presentation. At the end of the...
