Lesson 1 (from Chapters I and II)

Objective

When the story opens, Sara the protagonist, is ten years old. She has three older sisters, a loving mother, and a religious fanatic of a father. All three of Sara's sisters work to try and support the family. Sara's mother, Shenah, spends her days tending to the house and her husband. Sara's father Reb spends much of his time reading the Torah and other holy books. He criticizes the members of his family for being female and for them being poor. The objective of this lesson is to analyze the motives behind Reb's urging of the women in his household to get and hold down jobs.
