The objective of this daily lesson is to introduce the students to graphic novels as literary works, how they differ from novels and how Out from Boneville meets the requirements of a graphic novel.

Lesson

1. In-Class Discussion: Briefly introduce Out from Boneville to the students and discuss the author. What type of literary work do the students think this is? Explain that this is a graphic novel. A graphic novel is a piece of literature that uses sequential art to tell a story. The art used in a graphic novel can be an experimental design but tends to be designed similarly to a comic book. The narrative is housed within the picture and there tends to be no other blocks of writing. Do the students agree that Out from Boneville is a graphic novel? If not...
