Objective

Chapter 1: The People of Bone Gap establishes the mood and tone of the novel and sets the stage for the story by introducing Finn O’Sullivan as a protagonist who was strange but endeared in the town. Objectives for this lesson include: defining and identifying tone, mood, and narrative style, examining the character of Finn O’Sullivan, and exploring foreshadowing in Chapter 1.

Lesson

1. In-class Writing - In the first chapter, students are briefly introduced to Finn and other characters from Bone Gap. Have students to write 3-5 predictions about what they think might happen in this novel. What are the “oddities” that surround Finn’s character? What do you think these oddities foreshadow for Finn? How is Finn regarded within the town?
