This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Characters

The kid/The man - A young man from Tennessee who leaves home at fourteen because he is only a reminder to his father of his mother's death. He travels for a while, making a living doing whatever odd job he can find.

Judge Holden - He is often referred to in manners that suggest he is the devil or closely related to him. Once time he walks across fire and at another he creates gunpowder out of dirt and urine. He is highly intelligent but no one knows where he comes from or...
