Objective

Chapter 1

In the beginning of Chapter 1, Chance is in the garden comparing plants to people. To him, plants are like people because they need care in order to live and survive disease. They also need to die peacefully. Plants are different from people in that plants cannot think for themselves, be mindful of themselves, act with intention, reasons, dream or control their own growth as people can. Chance even compares a part of the garden to a graveyard. The class will explore the layers of meaning of these comparisons as well as their validity.

Lesson

1) Whole Class Brainstorm: Make two columns on the white/black board. One column is headed "Plants", the other "People". Have the class brainstorm the characteristics of each of these two living things. Compare the results to what Chance has put forth.
