Objective

Chapter 1: April 25, 1861

At the start of Chapter 1, Union soldiers gathered at the courthouse in Flint, Michigan in preparation for the Civil War. A week and a half before, on April 15, 1861, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers for the Union Army and young men poured into recruitment stations. The objective of this lesson is to examine the division of north and south over slavery and President Lincoln's role in the Civil War.

Lesson

1) Pair Work: Map: Students should create a map that outlines the states by their participation in the Confederation or the Union by using two different colors. Students should create a time line on the side of the map to show when each state seceded from the Union.
