Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to familiarize themselves with the author’s background and make inferences about why Michelle Obama decided to write this memoir.
Michelle Obama is a former First Lady of the United States. Obama's husband, Former President Barack Obama, was the Commander-in-Chief for eight years.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of The Becoming? Where is she from? What does she do for a living? What is she known for? What events in her life may have inspired her to cover the topics and themes covered in the book? What about the author’s background or personal interests compelled her to write her first memoir?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information that reflects some of the book's themes. Regroup and ask students to...
