Objective

Beautiful Disaster is a young adult romance novel by Jamie McGuire. This contemporary narrative details the tumultuous relationship that Abby Abernathy has with pugnacious Travis Maddox at Eastern University. The first chapter of the novel introduces the novel’s protagonist, Abby, and her best friend, America Mason. In this lesson, students will analyze and discuss these two main characters, identify the novel’s narrative style, and research the setting of Eastern University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Research Activity: Conduct research on the setting established in Chapter 1 of Beautiful Disaster. Where is Eastern University located? What religion is the college associated with? What clues in the first chapter indicate the time period in which the story takes place?
