Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Janet Evanovich goes into great detail describing the homes that are along A St. NE.
The objective of this lesson is to gain an understanding of architectural designs and styles of housing.
1) Initiate a class discussion on the different types of buildings around town. How many different styles are there? What does this say about the town?
2) Break the class into groups of three or four and have them research some pertinent information about their hometown. Explain when it was founded and by whom. Who were the major financiers and landowners of the time, and what kinds of styles have grown since then.
3) Have each student research four different styles of housing that appeals to them. What about these styles catches the eye? What are their major design flaws? Are there any of these styles in your neighborhood? Where have you seen them before?
