1. Describe Rumon's appearance when he first meets Merewyn.

Rumon has shiny black hair, cut short above his ears, and no beard. Rumon wore a soft blue mantle furred with squirrel and embroidered at the hem. The mantle was held at the shoulder by a glittering enameled brooch. Rumon has long leather shoes with a design on them, and his legs are covered by blue trousers, then cross-gartered to the knee with linen strips.

2. Describe Caw when he is first introduced in Chapter 1.

Caw is an enormous serf of 18, whose body is thick and sold, whose hair is black and shaggy, and who is so tall that he rises a foot above most men. Caw has never learned proper speech. Caw's "wits hand been addled" 15 years earlier when he saw the horrors that the Vikings had committed. Caw is capable, though, in that he is able to fish and tend the pigs and his strength is often useful.
