Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Jane Austen - This English novelist is known for works depicting the British middle class that are a landmark in the development of the modern novel.

Sir Max Beerbohm - This British journalist is celebrated for witty caricatures of the fashionable elite.

Arnold Bennett - This British novelist, critic, essayist, and playwright's major works include a series of novels set in the author's native region of the "five towns," then called the Potteries.

Charlotte Bronte - This British novelist of the Victorian era is celebrated for the masterpiece Jane Eyre.
