Objective

Chapters 1 and 2 introduce the personalities of two of the main characters in the book. The objective of this lesson is to discuss when and where the story takes place in order to get a good feeling for the environment of the book.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: In what year does Around the World in Eighty Days start? What is the environment? Where does the story take place? What was the world like? How is it different from today?

2. Groups: Have the students break into groups of three or four. Have them discuss the differences between life in the late 1800's versus their life today. What do they have and can't live without today? Would there be an equivalent in the 1800's? What would that equivalent be? What would they miss the most?
