The auto industry is rapidly expanding as more factories have opened. Detroit experiences an influx of people looking for work in the high-paying auto industry.

Detroit was a major gathering place for the Ku Klux Klan. 1925 is also an election year, resulting in increased political pressure and tension. That summer, blacks who had moved into white neighborhoods are attacked five times.

The Sweets delay the move until after the beginning of the school year, thinking there will be less people to see them move. The couple also moved in at night to make the move less noticeable.
