Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
In this chapter, Frank introduces the reader to himself and his family. It is critical for students to understand what life was like during the Great Depression, both here in the United States and in Ireland. The objective of this lesson is for students to identify and understand the setting of a memoir.
1) Prereading: Make a list of everything you know about the Great Depression and what times were like back then. When finished, create a list of everything you know about Ireland during that same time. What things were similar? What was different about the two places?
2) Background Information: Have students break into groups of two or three. Using the internet, have students look up the terms "Great Depression" and "Ireland" in a search engine, and make a list of what they learn. Have student groups present to the class their findings.
