The events in people's lives can be told from different perspectives and the essence of the story can change depending on who tells the story and the nature of the story. The objective of this lesson is to learn the distinction between autobiography and other literary forms.
1. In-class discussion and activity. Have the class discuss the distinction among autobiography, biography, and fiction. You can draw three columns on a chalk board or flip chart with the three headings at the top. Have the students give input on the characteristics of each form. Once the understanding is established, have students write three paragraphs about themselves. One written in the form of autobiography, another in the form of biography, and the third written as fiction. Have them discuss the approach of the three writing samples and how they differ. Some students can even share their writing samples...
