Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. Lieutenant General Joseph F. Carroll - This character enters the seminary at age twelve but returns home at twenty-four, just before promising celibacy and being ordained. He studies law at night and, after graduation, is hired by the FBI.

Mary Morrissey Carroll - This character is a wise-cracking, redheaded working girl. She is the second child of eight, whose father abandons them. She quits school at fourteen, lies about her age to become a telephone operator and at twenty-three is a supervisor.
