Chapter 1, "In the Valley of Bones"

• James Carroll reflects upon what takes place in the chapel at Bolling Air Force Base on Saturday, February 23, 1969, when he is then Father James Carroll celebrating his first Mass and giving his first sermon at his parent's parish according to tradition.

• Sitting in the front pew are the host and hostess, Father James Carroll's parents, Lieutenant-General and Mrs. Joseph F. Carroll, Joe and Mary; Joe is founding director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in charge of enemy counts and evaluating targets in Vietnam.

• Celebration begins with the organ playing, the choir singing a hymn and a procession of priests and lay assistants, as well as the author, the newly-ordained priest.
