• The narrator unlocked the safe beneath their desk, grabbed an old service automatic, and crept toward the bedroom doorway.

• A few moments passed, just enough time for the narrator to feel ridiculous; they convinced themselves that what they had heard was just the house settling.

• Poochini, the family’s German shepherd, was in the bedroom with the children, and let out a bark.

• The narrator had been up working on a translation at the desk in their room, and it was after two in the morning when they had gone to bed.

• They thought they had heard a floorboard creak in the hall, and had instinctively gone for their gun.

• Suddenly a man appeared in their bedroom.
