Objective

The objective of this lesson is to examine the importance of males in Pakistani culture, and what is revealed about male superiority. Amal is excited about her new baby sister. Then she realizes that her parents think having another daughter is a bad thing.

Class Discussion: What opportunities are available for Omar, even though his mother is a servant, that are not available for Amal? What does Hafsa understand about the importance of boys and a male heir? How does she realize that Malik and Mehnaz are desperate for a son? Why do sons bring more joy than daughters? How are sons more valuable than daughters? When does Amal realize that boys are more important that girls? How does she realize that having a daughter is not a good thing? What is revealed about male superiority?
