Hero vs. Villain

Students create a three-part chart with the headings "Hero", "Anti-hero", and "Villain". Students take each character from the novel and list them under the appropriate headings. If there is disagreement, encourage students to resolve it rationally.

Soldiers on Boxes

Student re-create the scene at the beginning of the novel, where the soldiers are sitting on the boxes, playing cards. The key to this exercise is to show how their outward happiness is affected by their inner sorrow. The scene can be scripted, improvised, or a combination of both.

Artist's Rendering

Each student draws or paints a scene from the novel that he or she thinks is significant.
