Objective

Chapter 1

According to this book, Alaska was formed around 1 billion years ago. At first it had no mountains, trees, or other growth, but evolved over time. This lesson will discuss how Alaska, as we know it in this book, came into being.

Lesson

1) Small Group Project: Using clay and water in a shallow container, show the changes in North America regarding the earliest formations of what was going to become Alaska. Look carefully at the science behind this project and discuss how slight variations would have affected the history of Alaska.

2) Class Discussion: As the geological plates shifted, Alaska could have ended up attached to any of three continents. Discussed what would have happened differently if it had attached in different places.

3) In-Class Activity: Create a chart showing the pros and cons of the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska.

4) Homework: Consider Alaska's terrain and animals...
