1. Homework: In preparation for this lesson, conduct brief research on the area called the West Indies (now often called the Caribbean in the United States). Learn why it is named the West Indies and what the area is like in the early 1800's (from about 1810-1825). Write a brief paper about what characteristics of the West Indies you think might impact the plot of Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies. For example: What diseases were rampant during that time in that area and how could that affect the story? Were pirates a big problem and would that influence the action? What about the slave trade might influence the action...
