Character Descriptions

Larry Cook - This character is a wealthy respected Iowa farmer, son and father. After his wife's death, he purchases the adjacent farm--making his farm about one thousand acres--and begins sexually abusing his elder daughters.

Ginny Cook Smith - This character is the eldest daughter, the narrator--in her mid 30s when she remembers the period between her mother's death (when she was 14) and her marriage (when she was 19). She has had five miscarriages, the most recent six months before the novel begins.

Rose Cook Lewis - This character, the middle daughter, is two years younger than the oldest daughter. She remembers her father molesting her, but she has kept silent, because her older sister has said nothing. When diagnosed with cancer, she sends her two daughters to boarding school.

Caroline Cook Rasmussen - The youngest daughter, six when her mother died, was raised by her older sisters...
